Getting to the finish line in record time is her ultimate goal. Maziah Mahusin is preparing to break records at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In 2012 this 400m hurdler and runner became the first Female Olympian ever from the tiny, oil-rich nation of Brunei to compete with some of the best runners in the world, including Jamaica’s World Championship bronze medalist Novlene WilliamsMills. In the summer Olympics of that same year in the 400 m event she achieved a new national record of 59.28.
Maziah’s goal is to set new records for Brunei at international competitions. She believes that even though many people in Brunei think that ‘sport cannot give you a future’ she would be proud to become the first female athlete from Brunei to participate at the Olympics. Her motto is “Never give up!’ – she did not give up and is thrilled to know that many young athletes have been inspired to run because of her track record.
