Interview with Wu Chun

Wu Chun’s book launch in Fitness Zone, Kiulap

The launch of Wu Chun’s new book, Ignite Courage caused a media frenzy across Asia.

Anyone who keeps abreast of Chinese entertainment news would now know that Wu Chun is married and has two young children. This admission got critical reviews from the press and proved to be a very emotionally challenging time for Wu Chun.

We spoke to him about the courage that it must have taken for him to reveal this very personal side of his life to the media.

Tell us what was going through your mind during the book launch when you announced that you are now a family man?
As I sat on the stage throughout the half an hour interview I was (almost) blinded by the flashlights shooting at me from the flood of reporters. It was non-stop. They took pictures of my every gesture. The way they scrutinised my private life was pretty intense. Some reporters even demanded a public apology from me for withholding information about my private life.

On the other hand, some reporters gave me a lot of encouragement for my decision to step up and make the announcement.

Did the announcement do any damage to your entertainment career?
Good question. Prior to the announcement, I was thinking that it could either go one way or the other. And I was preparing for the worst. No doubt, I received my share of bad press coverage, but career wise this announcement has opened up many exciting new opportunities for me. I must also add that I was encouraged by the outpouring of support from netizens and fans.

And after the initial shock had worn off the press actually turned around and gave positive comments.

As for brand Wu Chun in the entertainment industry, apparently my image has shifted from being free and single to now being a responsible husband and father. My manager has been receiving a number of endorsement inquiries from new organisations which we had not previously considered. For me, the biggest bonus is that, most of my fans stood by me. I received messages like – ‘I used to love Wu Chun but now I love Wu Chun and his whole family.’

We printed 20,000 copies of the book, not only did it hit the top of Taiwan’s book chart on the first week that it was launched, but it is now sold out! We are now in the process of printing more copies. As far as my entertainment career is concerned, I am still doing what I love and that is making movies for my fans and continuing to inspire them with the same positive energy that they have given to me.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something is more important than fear.”

What do you say to the pundits who viewed the announcement as a marketing ploy to sell books?
So far the book has raised BND 150,000 all of which will be distributed amongst NGOs that support cancer foundations in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Brunei. This is a cause which I have also been personally supporting.

How did you summon the strength to take such a bold step?
I came across a quote that said, ‘Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something is more important than fear.’ I think that pretty much sums it up.

Aside from the announcement about your family life (which took up only 3 pages of the entire book) what was the book’s main message?
The book documents the ups and downs of my life’s journey and the lessons which I have learnt along the way. I’m a reader myself, and I owe a great gratitude to the many authors whose works have influenced me. This is my small way of giving back to them and to the community. Hopefully, it will inspire others to be courageous but more importantly, to pursue their passion and find greatness in what they do.

On his 30th birthday Wu Chun made a wish list of all the things that he wanted to accomplish by the age of 70 and on that list was writing a book. It has taken him four years to do this but he can now tick it off the list. Interestingly enough Wu’s book also highlights the top 10 books which have inspired him along with many motivational quotations from famous people.

One of our favourite quotes from this book is as follows:

“I have seen people that are extremely brilliant and they don’t have the staying power. They don’t have that never give up quality. I have said that other than bad ideas, which is a reason for failure, the ability to never quit or give up is something that is very, very important for success an entrepreneur.” Donald Trump.
