Brunei’s First Female Airline Captain
Soaring to greater heights, Captain Sharifah Czarena Suriany Syed Hj Hashim of Royal Brunei Airline has turned her childhood dream into realty. She began her aviation career as a cadet pilot in 2003 when she was sent to the UK for intensive initial pilot training at the Cabair Flying School, Cranfield. After graduating in 2004 she was sent on secondment to Loganair as a junior First Officer on the Saab 340 turbo prop aircraft. She then returned to Brunei in 2006 to join RB as a First Officer on the B767-300ER.
After becoming a Senior First Officer in 2007, she was selected to train to become a Captain in 2012. Captain Sharifah also captained the first all-female flight crew for Royal Brunei Airlines on its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights out of London, accompanied by Senior Flight Officer, Dk Haryati Pg Hj Abd Rais; one of Brunei’s first Female pilots. Captain Sharifah’s accomplishment in this field has paved the way for many young women to follow – she has proven that where there is a will, there is most certainly a way.
